Every Shot Was Amazing

Usually when you have a photo shoot, you take hundreds of photos in order to get that perfect shot. It's a simple matter of probabilities, really. The more photos you take, the more likely it is that one will be great. When shooting Ilvy, I soon realized that there was going to be a problem. As I was glancing at the photos during the shoot, I realized that there were dozens and dozens of photos that looked amazing. I knew it was going to be nearly impossible to choose from amongst them, and when I started downloading the photos into my computer, I realized that I was right. It's not a bad problem to have, really.

Even better, Ilvy is smart, charming, personable, and takes direction super well. It's always great when you get to work with models like her.

The funniest part of this story is that my girlfriend actually scolded me for not being more daring with my photos. She said that I was playing it safe and being far too conservative. Ilvy was also thinking that we could try some more daring shots. I guess I'm just not cut out for this stuff. :)

A Perfect Look

Once in a while you just get lucky. I had an idea for a shoot that involved a crazy dress, white hair way up in the air, and flowers. I had a very particular idea about the dress, and about the model. Well, everything just fell into place shooting Agate. I sent a dress reference to the stylists, Ramona Lazda and Linda Akmenlauka, and they said that they had exactly the dress that I was looking for. Exactly. I was stunned when I saw the photos. I'm used to working with stylists who kinda-sorta are able to find something that's more or less is in the ballpark, but this was exactly right. I also wanted a model who was very pale, with very long, very light hair, and big blue eyes. When I saw Agate's portfolio, I knew that she had to be the one.

Well, everything went perfectly with the shoot and the photos came out about as well as I could have hoped. As a matter of fact, one of the photos was chosen by Emily Soto for an Editor's Choice award on 500px.com. That's not too bad given that the site has about 10 million active monthly users. Emily has been a huge inspiration to me for a very long time and I follow her work regularly. There are very few photographers in the world, if any, that I would choose to have recognize my work as worthy of any kind of award. I think I was jumping up and down like a little kid for about an hour after I got the news!

A Siren's Awakening

I recently had the chance to shoot a most beautiful model: Carolliny Mendonça of Wilhelmina Miami. She is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and we came to know each other through a friend we had in common from an agency in Buenos Aires. She was looking to update her bikini portfolio, and one doesn't have to look too hard to realize that you can't just pass on an opportunity to shoot a model this beautiful. While we did take a number of shots in bikini, I also wanted to take some shots with a more editorial feel, so we thought of putting her in a dress and shooting her in the water. They are definitely some of my favorite photos and Carolliny has the kind of charm and professionalism that you always hope to find in a model.
